Pirates Match Report 23/2/2008

Pirates 1st side narrowly lost to VOB in a tightly contested game at Radloff Park on Saturday. Pirates went ahead 4-1 in the early part of the game but the visitors chipped away consistently at this lead to get 6-4 ahead in the last innings with the home team still to bat. Pirates managed to bring in a further run but left too many on base as the VOB defense held firm to secure a 6-5 win. Best batters were J.Smit (3/3 and 1 home run) and B. de Waal (3/3 with 2 x 2 baggers).

It was one way traffic in more than one sense (Celine Dion - congestion) for the Pirates 2nd side, who lost 16-6 to visitors Westridge Yankees . The side from Mitchells Plain proved too strong for Pirates both in the field and with the bat. Brandon Jangles pitched well for Pirates and although the young team put up a spirited performance, too many errors in the field meant they were always struggling to catch up. B. de Waal batted 2/2 with a home run followed by G.Uys 1/1 and S.Hare-Bower with 1/2.

The U16 side managed to hang on for a win against Durbanville at home. Ian Matthews filled in admirably for Pirates' absent starting pitcher R.van Niekerk and managed to limit the Durbanville starting line up to only 2 runs in the first innings to which Pirates batters replied with 7 runs. The second innings saw Pirates faulter with errors and walks as the visitors piled on 8 runs with a good batting display. However Pirates kept up their barrage of batting and belted in a further 6 runs to maintain a 13 - 10 lead. With time running out Pirates then lifted their game, limiting the visitors to only one extra run to win the game 13 - 11 with a batting turn in hand.

U14 Pirates boys were really pumped up and focused for their Friday afternoon game against Durbanville at home. Myles van Heerden pitched well with 6 strike outs and was backed up with good fielding by all, especially Alex McConnach at short stop who took a diving stop and then still managed to pick off the runner at 1st with a peg thrown from the lying position. Nicholas Bridge the catcher performed well and took out 2 runners stealing to second base. Nicholas van Loggerenberg was best batter with a two bagger and he helped Pirates to a 3-1 win in a tightly contested game. However the Friday game seemed to take a toll on them as they battled against the big hitting Silvertree side on Saturday morning. A comeback in the 3rd innings when M.van Heerden and A.McConnach both hit 2 baggers was shortlived and even though Pirates pitcher N.van Loggerenberg struck out 6 batters Silvertree power batted their way to a 11-4 victory.

U12 lost 14-5 to Braves at Sunningdale and the U10 side battled with the bat and went down 27-12 to Crusaders away at Grassy Park.

Weekend Fixtures:

Home - 1st team vs Battswood 13h30; 2nd team postponed to 16/3; Masters - bye; U16 vs Athlone; U12 vs Durbanville 10h30;
U10 vs Braves 08h45
Away - U14 vs Angels at Parktown 10h15

Pirates Match Reports 16/2/2008

Pirates 1st side hosted Devonshire at Radloff Park on Saturday. Pirates batters gave themselves a head start by scoring 4 runs in the first innings. Both Pitchers then settled down and each team could only manage to eke out the odd run here and there for the remainder of the game. A dazzling pitching performance from pitcher, Darren Burns and solid outfielding from C.Lambert and B. De Waal saw the Devoshire big hitters caught on the boundry to secure the game 7-4 for Pirates. Best Batters for Pirates were G.Uys and C.Engelbrecht both 2/3. The second team game was postponed. The U16 team featuring some brand new players went down 13-5 against Bothasig at home. Bothasig Pitcher D.Clarke tied the home team batters down limiting them to only 2 runs in his 4 innings. Pirates battery of I.Matthews (pitcher) and Dylan Husted (catcher) frustrated the Bothasig batters for most of the game but fielding errors cost Pirates the game as Bothasig's final tally came off of only 3 hits. Pirates best batters were B.De Waal 2/3 and M.Lambert 2/4 with 1 home run. U14 game was postponed. U12 drew 10-10 against Bothasig.

Pirates Match Report 9/2/2008

Pirates 1st side hosted Goodwood Demons in the 4:00pm game at Radloff Park on Saturday. The big hitting Demons side proved too strong for Pirates and Demons came away with an 11-5 victory in the 7th frame. Although Pirates pitcher Darren Burns managed to strike out 6 batters, crucial errors in the field and indecisive batting by the home team resulted in a win for the visitors. Best batters for Pirates on the day were Bradley de Waal (2-4) and Brandon Jangles (1-2). Best fielders for Pirates were Cameron Smith (Catcher) and Bradley de Waal (Center Field) with a brace of fine outfield catches. The Pirates 2nd side played the early game for double points at Radloff Park against Thistles from Ottery and despite the sweltering heat both teams played top class baseball and kept the spectators entertained right up to the last innings. By this stage Pirates had edged ahead and with a batting still in hand won the game 6-5. Best batters for Pirates were Matthew Lambert (2-2) and Christopher Lambert (2-3). Best fielders for Pirates were David Willis Short Stop and Ricky Husted (1st Base). U16 game was cancelled due to school sports.
